Cheat Meals Explained

You may have seen the popular acronym 'IIFYM' used across social media channels and it simply means : 'If It Fits Your Macros'. Macro is short for Macro-nutrients which are the 3 major food groups which make up your daily diet:

  1. Carbohydrates 
  2. Proteins
  3. Fats

The IIFYM hashtag implies that if you know how many calories you require and how much of each macro-nutrient per day, it doesn't matter how you fulfil these quotas. So, if you wanted to eat ice cream to fill up your carbohydrates and fat targets, then it's fine, because 'it fits your macros'!


BUT, here's the catch, whilst technically you can continue to fuel your body against your activity goals using this technique, how healthy is it? Every once in a while, you will also see 'CHEAT MEAL/DAY' being tagged with photos of people stuffing themselves with pizza and sweets using the IIFYM principle but like everything in life, it's far better to achieve balance...

This isn't just a balance of macros but it's a balance of nutrients too. You might be successful in meeting your calorie requirements if you eat junk food, but you will end up malnourished and not functioning to your absolute best unless you fuel yourself with food & drink that nourishes your body. After-all, you also need MICRO nutrients which are present in food & drink in the form of vitamins & minerals (we'll write more about micros and their function in the body soon).
