There are loads of stories out there at the moment talking about what people are giving up for lent. It's usually food related items. Apparently our Prime Minister, Teresa May is giving up salt & vinegar crisps! But why should we put so much emphasis on restricting our diets?
Okay, it's a good time to look at what you're eating to ensure it is balanced and healthy. So if you're eating 10 bags of crisps per day, perhaps you could reassess that! When someone suggested we write a blog post on what we are giving up for the 40 days of lent, our immediate response was "we're not giving up anything"! This doesn't mean we are greedy and want it all. Quite the opposite. We are big believers in moderation. Some people might think that moderation is boring because sometimes it's fun to binge out on cake, chocolate or something less healthy than usual. We agree that this is fun but do not agree that moderation is boring. It's rewarding to know your limits and make it your mission to seek out the highest quality, awesome, wholesome foods within those limits which make you feel great about life!
Lent is traditionally speaking, a Christian observance of 40 days of fasting or giving something up. It usually ends around Easter Sunday. We are not going to comment on religious observations as it's a personal preference and we respect all different views and beliefs. However, if we are meant to give something up to make us more thankful, the thing is, we are already so thankful for our natural environment! Living and breathing our organic values means that we respect and protect nature. Our natural world is incredible. It's produced food and drink in a vast variety of colours, shapes, sizes and flavours. Nutrition is a culinary exploration! Just the other day we were really pleased to see a couple of athletes in our local organic shop browsing the shelves for exotic beans & pulses to make a nutritious meal. They stocked up on all sorts of organic goodies and it was amazing to see people exploring produce outside the mainstream supermarkets! Try seeing what you can find to cook with outside of your normal weekly shopping list.
If you choose variety and choose colourful fruit & veg alongside a good balance of complex carbs, fat & organic protein, why restrict yourselves? There is so much on offer to delight out palettes that it should not be about cutting back. You don't have to hold back if you are getting great quality and know your limits. Just look at the colourful organic pumpkins in the photo above - how beautiful! Organic products are often full of flavour so it's actually more satisfying to eat than everyday alternatives. We'd rather have a packet of baked (not fried) organic vegetable chips than a packet of heavily processed, salt & vinegar crisps from the high street. It's all about the standard of food & drink we choose. Plus, we've said it before - diet is about energy intake, not restriction. Diet is far too synonymous with cutting back and sometimes, an unhealthy focus on restriction. Try changing your thinking around and look at your 'diet' as your opportunity to fuel your body with the best ingredients for success! It's a happier, healthy, fuller WHEY AHEAD®.
