Little Miss Muffet's Guide To Whey Protein

You might have heard the 1805 nursery rhyme:

"Little Miss Muffet,

Sat on a tuffet,

Eating her curds & whey"

We're not quite sure why she was eating curds & whey in raw form, but hey..she was obviously on to something! Maybe Miss Muffet was a closet power-lifter?

So, what exactly is whey?

Whey is the bi-product of the cheese making process. When cow's milk is coagulated to make cheese, the curds are moulded into the actual cheese and the watery liquid that is left behind is called whey.

The whey is the bit that contains most of the high quality protein from the milk and is often just thrown away by dairy farms or used as animal feed. But, when the whey is gently filtered at low temperatures, it removes most of the lactose and retains as many nutrients as possible. It's then spray dried so the water evaporates and you are left with whey protein powder. Check out our infographic:

Our whey protein is a whey concentrate with 27g organic protein per serving as opposed to whey isolate which undergoes further processing to remove more fat and lactose and pump up the protein content.

Being organic means that we try and steer clear of additional manufacturing and our product already has a high protein content and only 0.6g fat per serving (naked unflavoured). Plus, whey protein concentrate retains more of its biological value and nutrients than other proteins, so it's a cleaner, stronger choice.

What are the benefits of whey protein and why are people choosing it?

  1. Whey protein contributes to the growth and maintenance of lean muscle mass. Put more simply, in order to tone up, grow or rebuild those muscles after a good workout, you need to feed them with good quality protein.
  2. Whey protein has a higher concentration of protein per 100g compared to eggs, chicken and beef, so for those of you 'on the go', it's a convenient and effective way to boost your protein intake. If you don't like protein shakes, you can use whey protein powder to fortify your food instead (try our porridge recipe!)
  3. It's quick absorbing. This means it is an ideal way to get great nourishment to your muscles, fast, after a good workout.

At WHEY AHEAD, we believe in consuming a balanced and healthy diet and using whey protein as a supplement, not a substitute, for good quality food.

Organic is our passion because it raises the bar even further in terms of quality health & fitness nutrition.

Organic ensures that not only do you get all the benefits of whey, you also rest assured that absolutely no chemicals have come into contact with it, making it the purest form of protein available.
